About the University of Washington

The University of Washington, a non-profit public state higher-education institution, was established in 1861 and is situated in the urban setting of Seattle, a large city with a population range of 500,000-1,000,000 inhabitants in Washington. The institution has additional campuses located in Bothell and Tacoma.

Accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the University of Washington (UW) is a coeducational US higher education institution with an enrollment range of over 45,000 students. The university offers various courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees, such as bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and doctorate degrees in multiple areas of study.

These degrees are indicated in the UniRank degree levels and areas of study matrix. UW has a selective admission policy that considers entrance examinations, students’ past academic records, and grades. The admission rate ranges from 40-50%, making it an averagely selective institution.

International students are also encouraged to apply for enrollment. Additionally, the University of Washington provides a range of academic and non-academic facilities and services to students, including a library, housing, sports facilities, financial aid and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, online courses, distance learning opportunities, and administrative services.

Established approximately a decade after Seattle’s founding, the University of Washington is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast. It boasts a sprawling 703-acre main campus located in the city’s University District, as well as additional campuses in Bothell and Tacoma.

With over 500 buildings and more than 20 million square feet of space, the university is home to one of the largest library systems in the world. This system consists of more than 26 university libraries, art centres, museums, laboratories, lecture halls, and stadiums. It offers degrees through 140 departments and operates on a quarter system.

As the flagship institution of the six public universities in Washington state, the University of Washington is renowned for its medical, engineering, and scientific research. It is a member of the Association of American Universities and, according to the National Science Foundation, ranked 5th in the nation for research and development spending in 2018.

This is based on the $1.41 billion invested in these areas. Many notable alumni and faculty are associated with the university. These include 21 Nobel Prize laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, Fulbright Scholars, Rhodes Scholars, Marshall Scholars, and members of other distinguished institutions.

The university’s historic ties and collaborations with leading technology companies in the region, such as Amazon, Boeing, Nintendo, and especially Microsoft, continue to benefit its research and programs. Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and the late Paul G. Allen spent considerable time in the university’s computer labs for a startup venture before founding Microsoft and other ventures.

In addition to its academic prowess, the University of Washington also boasts highly competitive sports teams, known as the Huskies, which compete in the Pac-12 Conference of NCAA Division I. The university’s 22 varsity sports teams also represent the United States at the Olympic Games and other major competitions.
