Opportunity Description

In a bid to promote international, cultural, scientific, and technological cooperation, as well as Italian language and culture, and to support Italy’s economic system abroad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) is offering scholarships for international students not residing in Italy and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE) for the academic year 2022-2023.

Scholarships are available in both public and accredited Italian higher education institutions to pursue study, training, and/or research programs.

Benefits of the MAECI Scholarships

Candidates selected for the Italian Government Scholarships will receive the following benefits:

  • Scholars may be exempted from the payment of enrolment and tuition fees, however, this will depend on the policy of each university.
  • Applicants will receive coverage of health and medical/accidental insurance contracted by MAECI, for the entire duration of the grant.
  • The program will offer a monthly stipend worth 900 euros, on a quarterly basis. The scholarship allowance will be paid directly into the student’s Italian bank account.

Eligibility Criteria for the MAECI Scholarships

Candidates must meet the following requirements to be eligible for this scholarship:

  • Applicant must be a foreign student not residing in Italy from the list on this page, and by Italian citizens living abroad (IRE).
  • Candidate should not be older than 28 years old for Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programs/Italian Language and Culture Courses.
  • Students applying for Ph.D. programs should be under the age of 30.
  • Applicants for Research Projects under Academic Supervision must be under the age of 40.
  • Candidates who enroll in university courses taught in English must refer to the specific University’s language requirements. Applicants must provide proof of their Italian language proficiency. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the minimum required level is B2.

Language Proficiency

  1. Italian Taught courses: Applicants must provide proof of proficiency in the Italian language in order to enroll in an Italian-taught course. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the minimum required level is B2 (CEFR).

In addition, candidates who have taken an Italian-taught course or an Italian language course at university may submit a language certification issued by the course director certifying the required Italian language level.

2. English Taught courses: Applicants must provide a language certification indicating their proficiency in the English language in order to enroll in an English-taught course. Meanwhile, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the minimum required level is B2 (CEFR). For candidates from countries where English is the official language, self-certification may also be accepted.

Candidates with an English-taught Bachelor’s degree may submit a document certifying that their Bachelor’s degree study program was entirely held in English. There is no proof needed for that.

3. Advanced Italian language and culture courses: Applicants for Italian language and culture courses must provide proof of proficiency in the Italian language. Within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the minimum required level is A2 (CEFR).

4. Ph.D. programs and Research projects under academic supervision:

For Ph.D. programs and research under academic supervision, no proof of language proficiency is required.

Types of programs available for the MAECI Scholarships

  1. Master’s degree:

Master’s Degree grants are valid for a period of study of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months. Applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree to be admitted to the first year of a Master’s degree program; applicants who demonstrate satisfactory academic progress with their first year exams are admitted to the second year.

2. Higher education courses in the arts, music, and dance (AFAM):

Grants for Higher Education in the Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) are given for 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months of study. Meanwhile, Applicants must meet the entry requirements and academic qualifications established by the relevant AFAM Institute in order to be admitted.

3. Ph.D. Program:

Grants for Ph.D. programs are given for a period of 6 (six) or 9 (nine) months of study. To be admitted to a Ph.D. program in Italy, applicants must meet the university’s entry requirements and academic qualifications, as well as provide a letter of admission to the Ph.D. program from the relevant Italian university.

4. Academically supervised research projects:

This type of grant can be awarded to research projects carried out at Italian Research Institutions (for example, the Italian Research Council – CNR, the Italian National Institute of Health – ISS, the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics – INFN, the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics – INAF, The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – ISPRA, and others), public or recognized Universities, Museums, and Archives.

5. Advanced Italian language and culture courses:

Grants for Italian language and culture courses are awarded for a period of three (three) months only to students enrolled in an Italian course at a university or an Italian Cultural Institute.
