Opportunity Description
Applications for Joint Japan and World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) are now available to international applicants. Candidates for the JJ/WBGSP who are citizens of certain developing nations and have a history of helping the development of those nations may apply. The candidates must submit an application to a master’s program in a field related to development in order to be considered.
45 master’s program scholarships are available through JJ/WBGSP at 27 universities in Europe, the United States, Africa, Japan, and Oceania. The recipients of these scholarships may pursue studies in development-related subjects, such as infrastructure management, economic policy management, and tax policy, according to financing availability. No one may apply for the JJ/WBGSP in 2023 if they have not already gotten an admissions letter from one of the participating master’s programs.
Since 1987, the World Bank Group (WBG) has offered scholarship programs in collaboration with the Japanese government to help students from underdeveloped nations complete their graduate degrees abroad.

Benefits of 2023-25 JJ/WBGSP
Successful applicants will benefit from the JJ/WBGSP as follows:
- A travel cost of round-trip economy class;
- Allowance of US $500 for each trip;
- A full tuition fee for the student;
- Basic health insurance;
- Monthly stipend for accommodations, food, books, etcetera.
The following costs are the responsibility of the students:
- Visa application costs;
- Expenses of a scholar’s family members;
- Extra-curricular training or courses;
- Course costs that do not meet the minimum credits;
- Language training which is not part of the graduate program;
- Additional travel throughout the program course;
- Research, field trips, supplementary educational materials, participation in seminars or workshops, or internships;
- Educational equipment like computers;
- Resident permit fee
NOTE: The allowance amount varies depending on the host country.
Eligibility Criteria
The applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply to 2023-25 JJ/WBGSP:
- Be from a World Bank member developing country;
- Do not hold dual citizenship of any developed country;
- Be mentally and physically healthy;
- Have a university degree at least three years before the application deadline;
- Have paid working experience of at least three years;
- Be currently working in development-related work full-time paid position. The exception is with the nationals of a country conflict states and fragile;
- Have applied and got an unconditional offer from a minimum of JJ/WBGSP preferred university master programs foreign applicants’ home country or the country of residence;
- Not be World Bank employees and staff or family members of World Bank staff;
- After completing the program, the applicant should return to their home country.
